the nfl referees are heading to the sideline. the league and officials union agreed on a tentative eight year contract that will put the normal officiating crews back on field. goodell said we look forward to having the finest officials in sports back on field. now it's time to put the focus back on the teams and players where it belongs. >> green bay will have a hard time. >> the two sides got serious about the negotiations after monday night's game between the packers and seahawks, a blown call on the last play of the game cost green bay the victory. >> i've never seen anything like it. >> under the new deal the average pay for the league's refs will rise from $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 next year and $205,000 by 2019. the agreement includes changes to the officials benefits package. some nfl players are glad to see the real refs return. >> we need those guys. they have experience. they have an eye for the game. they understand the players, the coaches, the dynamics of the game. >> after a three month lockout and no game action since last

winter will the officials be ready? >> we're aware of the news rules. we've been working on tests and keeping ourselves in shape and we're ready to go at a moment's notice. we could from our perspective do it. it would be up to the league. >> while the regular refs will be on the field for tonight's game the deal is not done yet. the agreement has to be ratified by 51% of the officials. they will vote friday and saturday and could be back network for sun's slate of games. president obama and mitt romney campaign in virginia today, their first debate next week. yesterday the candidates were in ohio going head-to-head on such issues like taxes and foreign trade. in an effort to attract working class voters. for romney it's a mission in ohio to make up ground on the president with time running out. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. ohio is considered a must-win for both candidates. they've been spending so much time that governor kasich joked

they should start paying taxes in the state. it illustrates how important this handful of swing states are. president obama and mitt romney are following each other from one battleground state to another. on wednesday ohio was their target. >> you probably are aware that there's an election going on right now in ohio. >> i believe you're going to help me win ohio. >> reporter: today it's a quick flight to virginia. >> we're a compassionate people. >> reporter: on wednesday romney tried to convey a more empathetic candidate. >> we have people that are hurting, we have people that are disabled and poor and they need our help and receive our help. we're a charitable people. >> reporter: recent polls shows romney trailing the president on the question of which candidate cares about my needs. but time is running out for governor romney to change voters' minds. early voting is under way in two dozen states. it starts today in iowa and next week in ohio. that has both campaigns stepping

up their advertising in key swing states. >> we should measure compassion by how many people can get off of welfare. >> reporter: romney released a new 60 second ad. he talks about the struggles of average americans. president obama has out spent mitt romney on tv ads and the attacks have resonated with voters like this republican. >> he really doesn't know the common man. >> reporter: the latest poll shows president obama with a ten-point lead over romney in ohio. cbs news has decided to move ohio from undecided to leans obama, a win for the president there would move him 18 electoral votes closer to win. that's 270. >> susan mcginnis in washington. in the nation's capital, vice president joe biden hosted a reception for hispanic leaders last night. he predicted most would see a hispanic president in their lifetime and took a swipe at mitt romney. >> when i hear some of our friends talk about, you know, a nation that is a culture of

members of an indiana national guard unit returned home wednesday after a year long deployment in afghanistan. their mission was to patrol roads and clear away bombs in kandahar province. their homecoming was an emotional event marred by the sad reality some of their colleagues haven't made it back. >> reporter: it's been a year since she's seen her brother. that was sergeant clinton jordan. today was the day he and the 713th engineer company of the indiana national guard returned from war. she had a special delivery for her brother.

his new nephew, 7-month-old braden. >> he's home. and that's all i could ask for. >> reporter: these men spent the last year clearing land mines in afghanistan. >> all the times we talked about this day, it's finally here. >> reporter: six of his friends were not as lucky. they were killed. >> to lose six people like that is extremely catastrophic to me. >> reporter: specialist douglas has been home since january he was in a truck that was detonated by a roadside bomb. it killed four of the guardsmen. >> take me back to that day. >> it's a double edge sword. i want to remember but i don't. >> reporter: for nearly a month he lay in a coma at walter reed hospital with a broken pelvis, fractured spine, crushed ankle and punctured lung. >> i thank god every day i'm here. i was able to see my son's birth, and i was able to be back here in the states for that and
